Kuala Lumpur: Hong Leong Bank (HLB) is the first bank outside China and Hong Kong to partner Tencent's WeChat wallet, enabling its customers to use WeChat Pay as an alternative payment option.

HLB Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Domenic Fuda said this also enables merchants and individual users to conduct transactions using WeChat Pay in ringgit.

"HLB is the first bank in Malaysia to be approved as Tencent's local WeChat Pay master merchant acquirer and being the first country, outside of China and Hong Kong, to be able to make payments in the local currency," he said in a statement on Thursday. Fuda also said the partnership enables Chinese tourists to pay using their WeChat accounts seamlessly while visiting Malaysia.

"We are not only looking to expand the payment ecosystem to our Malaysian merchants, but also to cater to the Chinese tourist market.

"This will enable our customers and WeChat users in Malaysia to use this payment option, with a large number of merchants already signing up for WeChat Pay," he added.

Currently, WeChat Pay has more than 900 million active monthly users worldwide. – Bernama
