'Mega' plan to rejuvenate Putatan-Petagas River

Kota Kinabalu: Residents in Putatan, especially around Petagas, can look forward to the "renewal" of the Putatan-Petagas River for productivity and eco-tourism.Petagas Assemblyman Uda Sulai said paperwork and collaboration between parties and experts from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) are actively being carried out in order to implement the plan.

He said the "mega" plan is expected to provide comprehensive benefits to all residents of the district, including in economy and living and social standards, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

"Currently the relevant authorities are in the midst of establishing a joint venture with UMS to create new ways in renewing, repairing and cleaning the Putatan-Petagas River.

"A bilateral discussion was held recently to look for the best mechanism to rejuvenate the Putatan-Petagas River and various measures will be taken, including reviewing the level of its pollution, biology, social and other matters.

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Government continued its momentum in managing the economy in line with the commitment and spirit of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) when it posted record high state revenue of RM6.973 billion last year.

"The plan will be submitted to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal who, I believe, will support our pursuit," he said after attending a briefing session with UMS experts and research staff at the State Administrative Building, here.

The UMS delegation comprised Professor Dr Rosazman Hussin, Professor Madya Dr Gaim James Lunkapis, Dr Aseyah Uy Abubakar, Dr Lee Kuok Tiung (Humanity and Heritage Department), Professor Madya Dr Jidon Adrian Janauan (Engineering) and Julius Kulip (Institute of Tropical Biology and Conservation).

Uda said the intention was to rebuild the Putatan-Petagas River to be similar with the Venice River in Italy.

"Once this is successfully implemented, it will indirectly improve the economic status of the residents, especially those living near the river, who can offer travel services, sell food products and open up restaurants.

"This is also in line with our desire to empower the people in Petagas as it is close to Kota Kinabalu City and the airport with its famous biodiversity," he said.

Uda also called on relevant parties to plant "Putat" trees around the Putatan River to commemorate and restore the nostalgia of the area's name which was inspired by it.
