Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Police Deputy Commissioner Dato' Omar Mammah, 58, has been appointed Acting Sabah Police Commissioner effective Sept. 3, replacing Dato' Ramli Din who will move to Bukit Aman in Kuala Lumpur as Head of Secretariat for Research and Development. The handover ceremony took place at the Sabah Police Contingent Headquarters, Monday, witnessed by Bukit Aman Police Director Dato' Sri Asri Yusoff.

Omar in his speech thanked the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) for trusting him to appoint a Sabah Police Acting Commissioner until the new Sabah Police Commissioner was named.

"I really appreciate the trust given to me by the PDRM in managing governance and ensuring the smooth running of police operations in line with the demands of the PDRM leadership," he said.

Omar, who is from Semporna, joined PDRM in December 1989 and served as Chief of Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ) Sabah, Head of Sabah IPK Management Department and Selangor JSJ Deputy Chief.

Asri believed Omar will understand the situation in Sabah better and be able to cope with any situation.

"He was converted three times to the Sabah Contingent before assuming his position as Deputy Police Commissioner of Sabah and now as Acting Commissioner of Sabah Police. This is a great achievement for him" he said.

Ramli said his 20-month assignment as Sabah Police Commissioner has given him much experience and also a challenge especially during the recent 14th General Elections (GE14).

"As we know Sabah was a 'hot' state during the recent GE14, but with the trust, guidance, support and cooperation given by the PDRM leadership especially the Sabah Contingent, we were able to control and overcome the challenges," he said.
