Sandakan: Special Olympics Sandakan is confident that they will do well at the state-level floorball and netball tournaments which will be hosted by Tawau this weekend. The floorball competition is for males while the netball tournament is for females. "Our boys and girls have been in centralised training for their respective tournaments for over two weeks before going to Tawau," said Taren Sunil Manoharan the Chairman of SO Sandakan in a statement on Friday.

The six boys competing in the floorball event have been diligently training under their coaches Zakaria Jayari and Rohana Al Bani while the eight girls playing in the netball event proved to be equally determined while training under coaches A. Sarimah Nurfatin A. Mustapeng and Fitriani Ahmad Kamal.

Head of Delegation is the experienced Maria J. Chang who has been involved in SO activities for many years.

"All the players and coaches are from the 'Program Pendidikan Khas Integrasi' at SMK Muhibbah Sandakan," said Taren Sunil who proudly pointed out that the special athletes under that programme have produced exceptional results at several local, regional and international sports competitions.

"The aim of Special Olympics is of course to encourage our special athletes to be active in sports and games. We always stress to them the importance of enjoying the competition and winning over new friends. Coming back with medals is an extra bonus for them," added Taren Sunil.

The Sandakan SO players are already in Tawau and the tournaments, which will be held at the Tawau Basketball Stadium, are scheduled to end on Sunday.
