10 villages affected by flash flood in Tawau

Tawau: More than 10 villages were affected after a flash flood hit the district following incessant downpour at about 2am, Friday Among the villages hit were Kg Langsat, Kg Kijang, Kg Jagung, Kg Iban, Kg Durian, Kg Pengkalan Asli dan Kg Merotai Besar di kawasan Merotai along with Block A and B of Jaya Mawar as well as Kg Pasir Putih, Kg Sg Gading in Wakuba.

District Fire and Rescue Department Chief Sharudy Delamin said the department's seven volunteers in Merotai rushed to the location before the station personnel reached the scene after being alerted at 7.02am.

According to Sharudy, the department earlier received information from villagers that Sg Kijang was overflowing which caused the flood.

However, the flood at Pasir Putih involved evacuation of five men, eight women, including an under privilege woman, 11 children and eight babies to their relatives' houses.

He said fire and rescue personnel used aluminium boats during the evacuation process and the operation ended at 11.04am. For Wakuba, the team received a call at 1.14pm and rushed to the location and transferred a female senior citizen.

Meanwhile, Kalabakan MP Ma'mun Sulaiman and Merotai Assemblyman Sarifuddin Hatta visited the affected areas in Pasir Putih and Merotai to present contributions to the victims.
