Sabah not taking Melaka lightly
Published on: Sunday, September 09, 2018

Kota Kinabalu: The State Sukma football squad will not take Melaka lightly in their opening Group C match at Stadium Minin Parit Buntar tonight (Sunday) at 8.45pm.

Melaka were beaten 1-0 twice by Sabah in the President Cup campaign this season.

Team manager Benedict Asmat warned his players against complacency and said it is a different ball game, and wants them to focus on getting good start.

"It is good to have won the early matches but this is a different tournament and Melaka may have different set of players as well. So, I want the players to put behind the results from the President Cup campaign and instead focus on producing their best to get a good result tomorrow," he said, Saturday.

He added that the players are in high spirit ahead of the opening game and despite injuries to few of the players, he believed they are ready for the campaign.

"We are all ready for the game tomorrow. Although the team may have to do without captain Zaki Sapri, Kelvin Pengiran in defence and Eddey Ladius in midfield, I think we have strong enough covers in their absence.

"Senior team member Evan Wensley Wenceslaus is taking over from Zaki and Syahmil Nizam Igbal Khan will be replacing Kelvin while Shukri Baharun will take the midfield role from Eddey," he said.

The probable starting line-up tonight are Sakri Masri in goal, Evan Wensley Wenceslaus , Ranilson Batuil, Armizan Ruslim and Syahmil Nizam Igbal Khan in defence with Aidil Safee and Syukri Bahrun in midfield supported by Ariusdius Jais and Hamran Peter while Stanley Sulong and Shariman Mukarim will lead the attacks.

Meanwhile, only three teams are in Group C and Sabah will play against Penang in the final game at the same venue on Sept 13 while Melaka and Penang will play each other on Sept 11.
