Kota Kinabalu: Sabah is sending 10 players consisting of five boys and five girls for the tennis competition at the Perak Sukma. However, medals from tennis will not be counted into the official medal tally. Despite this, all the states are participating in the event. Sabah Tennis Association president Johnson Koh in a statement Friday said this was to show the authorities concerned that tennis as the second most popular individual sport maintains a great following in Malaysia.ADVERTISEMENT The notion that a host can ignore tennis in the Sukma Games is very disappointing and disruptive to the tennis fraternity, said Koh.According to Koh, who is also Tennis Malaysia vice president, there is a policy that states if that sport can obtain a medal at the SEA Games then it can be declared as a core sport. Koh stressed that if Malaysia cannot even hold an inter-state tennis competition in Sukma, then how can the country seek to produce a SEA Games medallist. He added that the promotion, searching for talent and further training must be from districts and states. The Ministry and relevant authorities must spearhead the initiative. ADVERTISEMENT Koh suggests the Sports Minister ensure tennis be included in all Sukma Games as it is regularly competed at the Olympic Games, Asian Games and SEA Games.
