Terengganu: Bumiputera entrepreneurs, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs), still require government assistance as the economic policy previously drawn up has yet to achieve its objective.Persatuan Tunas Usahawan Nasional (Pertunas) President, Amir Hakimin Che Razali said although a section of Bumiputera entrepreneurs had succeeded, the number was small and the majority still unable to effectively compete with their non-Malay counterparts.

"It is not time yet to reduce or stop assistance such as grants or funding to Bumiputera entrepreneurs in the country with the current economic policy not having yet met its objective.

"The said grants and funding are important as the Bumiputera entrepreneurs are not supported by strong sources of funding unlike the other races in the country," he said in a statement on Friday.

The Entrepreneur Development Ministry on Thursday envisioned the possibility of a reduction in free financial grants channelled to entrepreneurs in the country being reduced in the Budget 2019.

Its Minister Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof said the move was to ensure entrepreneurs did not misuse the free allocation for other than business.

He also foresaw the assistance to be handed out to entrepreneurs next year to be more in the form of loans.

Elaborating further, Amir Hakimin said apart from assisting existing companies, funding assistance from programmes such as Tunas Usahawan Belia Bumiputera (Tube) by SME Corp Malaysia, Prosper Retail under Permodalan Usahawan Nasional Bhd, the Agriculture Ministry's AgroPreneur Muda alongside others, were an excellent platform to birth Bumiputera start-ups in new Internet-based sectors. – Bernama
