Kota Kinabalu: Five men, including one from Kedah, were arrested by police for illegally selling firearms in Keningau.Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Omar Mammah said the five were detained separately following continuous information and intelligence.

He said a 36-year-old from Kedah was first detained in a raid on a premise at 1.40pm on Sept 6 where 36 firearm components, including 18 brandless silencers, 78 bullet types of 12 Bore and 60 bullet boxes of various brands were recovered.

"During interrogation, the suspect who claimed to be the owner of the premise led police to another place where nine windshield guns were recovered," he told a press conference at the Sabah Police Headquarters, here, Friday.

He added that the suspect acknowledged the supply of guns and ammunition from neighbouring countries through a mediator, a 32-year-old local, who was also arrested.

According to him, the second suspect led to the arrest of the third suspect, a 40-year-old local from Kg Gaulan, who is said to be an expert in repairing firearms.

"This (third suspect) was hired part-time by the first suspect to help repair damaged weapons. We also seized a kind of firearms following self-confession of the third suspect who was also involved in the sale of the weapons.

"Two other suspects, aged 31 and 29, who were also involved in the sale of firearms, were also arrested," he said.

The case will be investigated under Section 7 of the Heavyweight Penalty Firearms Act 1971 and Section 8(a) of the Weapons Act 1960.

In an unrelated case, a husband and wife were among four people arrested by police in two raids here on Tuesday.

Habibi said they also recovered about RM50,000 worth of syabu from the suspects following the arrests at a shopping centre and a condo.

He said two male suspects involved in a drug transaction were first arrested at the shopping complex at about 6.40pm following a tip-off.

"The two were found carrying two packets containing what is believed to be syabu (methamphetamine) and also tested positive for drugs in their urine," he said.

He said one of the suspects led police to a high-end condo around Luyang where they arrested a 19-year-old woman who was the wife of the main suspect arrested at the shopping complex earlier.

The fourth suspect, who is believed to be working for the syndicate, was also arrested at the condo during the raid.

"A plastic bag containing what is believed to be syabu weighing about 455 grammes were also recovered from the condo," said Habibi.

He said three vehicles, seven handphones, a watch and three books were among other items seized, adding that the total value of seizures is worth RM150,000.

All the suspects are from Sarawak and the case will be investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

In another case, police arrested two local men in their 20s believed to be involved in 13 house break-in cases over the last month in Luyang, Inanam and Tanjung Aru in Kota Kinabalu as well as Penampang and Kudat.

Habibi said the total losses reported by the victims of the 13 cases was about RM400,000, adding that the suspects, one of who was known as Mr. Black, were arrested after a brief car chase by police after they were spotted along Jalan Sulaman, here, Thursday.

"The suspects were in a rented Bezza car with a suspected fake registration number where several items believed used for criminal activities were also recovered," he said. - Jason George
