Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysia Day celebration this year is very significant to all Malaysians for they have successfully liberated themselves from the clutches of corruption and now hold on to a new hope for a brighter future. With this mission now accomplished, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said it is time for the people to make the best of the desired change that they have dreamed for a long time to design a better future for themselves.

"Together with the new state and federal government leaders, let us shine this light of change that we have all been longing for to brighten a future for all of us regardless of our race or faith," he said.

Shafie noted that while certain parties are still arguing about the actual date to celebrate the National Day and Malaysia Day, the people must not get too emotional about it until they forget the true meaning of independence.

"We all know that Malaysia was formed on 16 September 1963.

"Let's not get too emotional until we forget that what's more important is for us to understand the meaning of independence and translate it into actions as citizens who love our country," he advised.

On this occasion, Shafie called on all Malaysians particularly fellow Sabahans to draw from the spirit of independence to build a strong and united government.

He also called on the people to reject racism as the country's success has always been dependent on unity of its people of different races and beliefs.

In the context of Sabah, he said Malaysia Day celebration has its own special meaning to the people – including Sarawakians.

In relation to this, he said that the State Government will continue to negotiate and discuss with the federal government to further intensify Sabah's development agenda. He assured that this also includes the commitment to ensure all the state rights and interests through the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) would be mutually upheld.

"I wish to reiterate the State Government's commitment to empower its ties with the Federal Government as it is an important factor to achieve development," he said.

He also stressed the State Government's commitment to take its development and economy to greater heights, with focus on efforts to strengthen its financial situation through fiscal planning and management.

In line with this, he proudly announced that that ever since the new government has come to power, many investors have shown interest to invest in Sabah, particularly in the strategic sectors.

He said the management of commodity based economic resources will be strengthened while the state administrative machinery in the various departments and agencies will be restructured in stages.

"The aim is to improve our delivery system and reduce bureaucracy," he said.

On Malaysia Day, Shafie again called on the people to continue to celebrate unity in diversity so that there will be political stability.

"We must not use our differences as a hindrance to development. Instead, we should celebrate our differences by identifying what we all share in common.

"Our diverse faiths, culture and traditions are in fact assets which are of high value," he stressed. - Leonard Alaza
