Lifter kicks off Sabah gold rush
Kota Kinabalu: It was a fruitful day for Sabah on Sunday as they doubled their total medal tally hauling in five gold, four silver and four bronze medals plus another new Games record. The gold came from weightlifting, rugby, sepak takraw, archery and karate with the record set by Marceeta Marlyne Marcus in the women's 58kg weightlifting event.

Marceeta who had already ensured clean & jerk gold in her first attempt with 91kg in the women's 58kg smashed the Games record with her second lift of 97kg, which bettered the old record by one kilogramme.

However, she failed to lift 71kg at the start of the snatch event and was out of medal contention early.

Team manager bell Yasoi was happy with Marceeta's performance despite her failure to add gold in the snatch.

"Thank God, we managed to achieve our three-gold target with the effort from Marceeta today.

"Her failure to do well in the snatch was unfortunate. She is always weak in the snatch and to start the event with 71kg and not 70 kg as was supposed to caused her problem.

"She would have done better if it was to begin with 70kg as she had tried to lift 68kg twice easily during the warm-up," he said.

Sabah's second gold came in the archery field when Eugenius Lo Foh Soon with his score of 349 points clinched the men's 70m compound individual title.

Sabah women's rugby team then added the third as they demolished Selangor 36-0 in the final with Marytheresa Raj Thevaraj contributing 10 points with two tries.

The women's sepak takraw team who were tipped to deliver gold in the team regu 3 event was given a tough fight and had to come from a set down to beat Perak 2-1 in the final.

They lost their first Regu A match comprising of Nur Faizah Mohd, Nur Fateha Rossli, Razmah Anam 19-21,12-21 but Ellzah Blanda @ Bahari, Kamisah Khamis, Nadillatul Rosmahani Saidin managed to level the score with a 21-9, 21-10 victory in Regu B before the trio of Mardianah Sharifuddin, Nurfaezahni Masri and Roslina Aloysius won in three sets 21-14, 10-21, 21-11 to deliver the winning point.
