Ministry hopes Sabah can ease burden of medical specialists
Kota Kinabalu: Federal Health Minister Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad hopes the State Government can help ease the burden of medical consultants or specialists from the peninsula who are currently attached to hospitals in Sabah."We (Ministry) would like to obtain recognition from the State Government for these specialists so that they do not need to continue applying for the 90-day work permit as some of them have even been staying in Sabah for more than 20 years," he said.

"This matter is one of the long-outstanding issues discussed with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal," he said after paying a courtesy call on Shafie at Sri Gaya, here, Monday.

He also hoped for a better and effective collaboration between the Ministry and the State Government, especially with the State Health and People's Wellbeing Ministry.

"Sabah has been left behind in many sectors, especially health and education.

During the meeting, we also discussed about health infrastructure and financial allocation as well as the development of health facilities like health clinics and improving the hospitals in Sabah," he said.

On the devolution of powers in terms of health administration from the Federal Government to the State Government, he said the details are currently being scrutinised.

"Principally, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has announced the core policy (of devolution of powers) and I am confident the issue will be resolved soon, especially when we are driven by the spirit of New Malaysia.

"We are looking at the issue through two aspects, with financial decentralisation being one of them.

"With decentralisation comes certain portfolios such as health and education which will be managed by Sabah on its own, using the funds allocated for them," he said.

Also present were State Health and People's Wellbeing Minister Stephen Wong and State Health director Datuk Dr Christina Rundi.
