Kuala Lumpur: The Women, Family and Community Ministry is looking at conducting sex education awareness programmes outside schools to combat baby dumping and abortion cases in the country. "If we wait for the sex education to be taught in school, it will take a long time as we also need to train the teachers.

"So, the ministry is looking at the materials and how we can do awareness programmes without going through the schools," said its Deputy Minister Hannah Yeoh.

"We are also mapping on the locations where these cases take place so that the awareness programme can be conducted specifically for the target group," she said during a press conference after officiating a Malaysia Book of Records attempt to create the largest Jalur Gemilang, using 6,000 origami cranes at a mall here.

She was responding to questions on the ministry's response to several baby dumping cases that happened recently.

"We are running out of time as the (baby dumping) cases had been increasing and we urge everyone to be proactive in combating this. If you do not teach your kids about sex, somebody else will and they will learn the wrong thing," she said.

Yeoh also urged parents to help their children to differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate physical contact.

"I think it is important for parents and guardians to teach their kids what is a bad touch and what is a good touch. Sexual abuse occurs among children because they do not know that it is a dangerous touch. There are a lot of accurate materials online and this is no longer a taboo subject; we need to educate our children on basic things like this," she said.
