Sabah surpass Kuching gold haul

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah contingent won six more gold medals at the 19th Sukma Games in Ipoh on Thursday to surpass their previous gold medal haul from the previous Games in Kuching.With two more days of competition to go, they now have a total of 26 golds, one more than the 25 they won two years ago.The day also saw Sabah winning their first ever Sukma gold in muaythai after Nurul Tasha Amira Abdul Rahman won the women's 42-45kg title by beating Nor Atasha Mohd Nor of Perak 30-27 in the final.ADVERTISEMENT At the pool, Hollymax Bell won the first swimming gold for the contingent with a time of 56.55s in the men's 100m butterfly final.Earlier in the day, national diver Jellson Jabillin as expected delivered the gold in the men's platform with 347 points.In pencak silat, Nurulhazifah Jederion easily subdued Malahayati Zahlan of Federal Territory 5-0 in their showdown to win their second gold in the competition.Sailing also had a fruitful day with two golds, one from the optimist mixed team of Shahieran Raiman/Syaharoul Aiman/Aiman Adam Firdaus/Nur Awatif Safri/AsnawiIqbal Adam, and also from the optimist's under-15 boys title won by Syahzharoul Aiman.ADVERTISEMENT Athletics finally won their first track gold in the final event with the men's 4x400m quartet of Riksi Tahir/Shahrimien Saimoh/Tonga Jody Edmund/Zaidie Khani Kanisus crossing the line ahead of the rest in 3:14.42s.Sabah athletes also won seven silver and seven bronze medals with two of the silvers from athletics through Benedick Ian Gawok in then men's 110m hurdle (14.460s), and javelin thrower Alif Razi (57.68m).

Meanwhile, athletics delivered the four bronzes with Karmentina Nadia Quadra in the women's 100m hurdles, Chelsea Cassiopea Evali Bopulas in the women's 200m, the women's 4x400m relay team of Camelis Jasten/Chelsea Cassiopea/ Sharifah Aisyah Mohd/Puteri Nur Sharifah, and Beckham Buing in the men's javelin.The rest were from diving duo Nur Ain Nadzmi and Nurfazriyanti Jali in the women's synchronised platform, Caroline Joachim in the snatch category and the women's 4x200m freestyle swimming team of Cheng Ka Wan/Chu Xin Ying/Loo Yie Bing/Wong Hsiao Thang. - GL Oh
