Need to address issue of disabled losing jobs
Kota Kinabalu: The issue of the general public with disability losing their jobs or unable to be employed needs to be addressed by creating a new line of job opportunities based on their strengths and abilities.Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal said the difficulty of the disabled in finding jobs in this competitive modern era was increasingly worrying despite them possessing valuable resume and job experience as well as knowledge.

"Despite the objective of this programme which is to allow employees suffering from injuries and sickness to be able to retain their jobs with companies, there exists a group of disabled employees who have lost their jobs due to their state which calls for help.

"Necessary steps need to be undertaken to ensure maximum recovery from them, including physical and vocational rehabilitation as well as job training to guide them in creating a better resume.

"Additionally, appropriate job selection, discussions with doctors and providing exposure to employers on aspects of disability and methods of working in this workplace should also be emphasised," he said when officiating the 2018 Sabah Labour Convention at TH Hotel, here, Wednesday. His speech was read by State Education and Innovation Assistant Minister Jenifer Lasimbang.

Shafie said the Social Security Organisation (Socso) will be implementing the "Bantuan Interim Sistem Insurans Pekerjaan Bantuan," an initiative designed to alleviate the burden of the unemployed, from Jan 1 to Dec 31.

"Unemployed who are qualified to be eligible for this programme will be able to receive a cash allowance of RM600 per month for a maximum of six months," he said.

It was also revealed that the Ministry of Human Resources through Socso has also implemented the "Return to Work" programme which will demonstrate and prove the ongoing commitment to empower the country's labour.

The programme is a comprehensive rehabilitation implemented on the basis of a biopsychosocial concept of multidisciplinary approach that aims to help the people who are insured to recover and return to work.

The 2018 Sabah Labour Convention was the second organised by the State Labour Department featuring seven paper presentations covering current topics of the country's labour industry.

The convention is one of the initiatives in the Human Resource Ministry through the State Labour Department as a leader in maintaining industry harmony in the country where the employers, employees and the public are informed about current issues.

Also present at the programme Human Resource Ministry (Labour Policy Division) Deputy Secretary Bashah Bachik. - Locksley Ng
