Prostitution: Widow, 45 ordered to be caned four strokes
Terengganu: "You are already 45 years old and should be mature enough to differentiate between wrong and right," said Syarie Judge Kamalruazmi Ismail. The Terengganu Syariah High Court judge said this when making his judgement against a widow who pleaded guilty to a prostitution charge here Wednesday.

Kamalruazmi then ordered the twice divorced woman to be given four strokes of the cane and undergo a six-month rehabilitation at the Baitul Ehsan Women Protection Centre in Sabak Bernam, Selangor, beginning Wednesday.

He also ordered the caning sentence to be carried out at the Kajang Women's Prison in Selangor after the 14-day appeal period was over. The woman was charged with committing preparatory acts for prostitution at a hotel here at 11.45pm on Sept 19. The charge, under Section 25 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Takzir) (Terengganu) Enactment 2001 carries a maximum fine of RM5,000, or imprisonment for up to three years, or six strokes of the cane, upon conviction.

Kamalruazmi also advised the woman not to repeat the offence and take the sentence as a lesson. The prosecution was conducted by Terengganu Syarie prosecutor Mohd Kahzmizan Abdullah, while the woman was represented by lawyer Fazru Anuar Yusof.

Meanwhile, raids involving khalwat cases in Kelantan by the State Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JAHEAIK) are carried out according to Standard Operating procedures (SOP), said Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah.

He said the raids were conducted after the department received complaints, including from the public or village heads.

"The SOP is formulated by experts in the field. There is no interference from politicians and it (raid) is conducted according to regulations.

"Knocking on all room and peeping are not allowed in Islam and we do not use that approach," he told reporters after the state executive council meeting here Wednesday.

In another development, Mohd Amar said the Kelantan Islamic Foundation (YIK) would take over management of the Maahad Darul Anuar, Pulau Melaka here. – Bernama
