Senior citizens: Ministry to strive for bigger allocations
Sandakan: The State Health and People's Wellbeing Ministry will strive to increase allocations for welfare homes for the aged in the State to ensure the wellbeing of senior citizens. Its Minister Datuk Stephen Wong said he was aware that the infrastructure at such homes in the State was lagging.

He said the Government was committed to safeguarding the welfare of senior citizens and would thus strive to provide more allocations for senior citizen welfare homes.

"I am determined to increase the budget to the Sabah Welfare Services Department so that the infrastructure and additional staff in all welfare institutions can be added to provide comfort to their residents," he said when closing the Family Day of Sri Harapan Senior Folks Homes, here.

The event was jointly organised by Sri Harapan Senior Folks, Sandakan Parol Office, Sandakan Health Clinic Rehabilitation Unit, Outpatient Mobile Clinic and volunteers of the Sabah Welfare Department.

Meanwhile, Stephen said 18 per cent of the Malaysian population would reach the age of 60 by 2030.

"The ageing trends have to be taken into account by all levels of society in order for us all to contribute to the welfare and development of senior citizens.

"There are three main trends of ageing: Social, Health and Finance.

Therefore, awareness of the ageing trends is important for us to understand and carry out our responsibilities," he added.

Stephen also said the young generation must be taught to respect senior citizens. - Winnie Kasmir
