Forced to swim two hours after boat taken
Papar: A 20-year-old was robbed by three individuals in a speedboat, one of them armed with long sharp weapon, while fishing alone in waters near Mandahan and Kimanis at dawn on Thursday.Mohd Ridzuandin bin Jamdin lost his fibre boat, an outboard engine and two cans of fuel to the trio while setting his fishing net. He jumped into the sea to save himself following the encounter, according to his mother Rozina Abu Bakar.

She said the eldest of four siblings was found at Pantai Manis beach at about 8.40am the same day by the public.

"Ridzuan's grandfather Sairin Diman informed me that Ridzuan was robbed at sea and safely reached Pantai Manis. All his cousins rushed to the beach and brought Ridzuan home at Kg Kuala, near here.

"I am very thankful to Allah SWT that he survived the ordeal by swimming for about two hours when given a choice to either die or jump into the sea by the trio," she said.

When met at her house in Kg Kuala, Thursday, Rozina said Ridzuandin only had his trousers on when found. He went out alone to fish at 4am Thursday without informing her or his dad. "Ridzuandin said he had to take off his shirt in order to swim better and upon reaching Pantai Manis beach, found his boat without the two fuel tanks and the outboard engine," Rozina said.

She said he suffered cuts on his legs and arms after he swam against strong waves and rain. He was brought to the district hospital before lodging a report. Papar Police Chief DSP Bartholomew AK Umpit confirmed that a report was lodged by Rizduandin and that police are investigating.

Incidentally, Rozina said her second son, Mohd Saffik Jamdin, 19, and two friends, Azizan bin Maradin, 23 and his brother, Azmi Maradin, 25, were pursued by three men in a boat in Kimanis waters when they left the house about the same time as Ridzuanddin. "They decided to flee but the men chased them. They finally hid in the estuary of Kimanis for two hours to make sure they are safe, she said. - Hayati Dzulkifli
