MACC arrests ex-DPM Zahid

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Thursday arrested Umno President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (pic) in connection with its investigation into abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money-laundering involving the funds of a foundation.It said in a statement that Ahmad Zahid, the former deputy Prime Minister, will face several charges under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.MACC said Ahmad Zahid was arrested at 3.15 pm at the MACC headquarters here.

"MACC made the arrest after obtaining the go-ahead to prosecute from the Attorney-General's Chambers," it said.MACC said Ahmad Zahid will be brought to the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court at 8 am tomorrow to face charges.Ahmad Zahid had arrived at the MACC headquarters at about 3 pm. He was there for the sixth time to assist in the probe into the alleged misappropriation of the funds of the foundation.Ahmad Zahid, who arrived in a white Lexus vehicle at about 3 pm, smiled and waved to reporters as he entered the building. About 50 of his supporters had gathered at the entrance of the building.

The MP for Bagan Datuk had been notified to be at the MACC head office today.Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid's wife, Datin Seri Hamidah Khamis, said to reporters that her husband had turned down a suggestion by his lawyer to secure bail so as not to be held overnight at the MACC lockup.

"The lawyer wanted to get him out but he refused. He will remain here until tomorrow morning and be taken to court from here," she said.Asked how she felt, Hamidah said: "I am OK."She said Ahmad Zahid had been detained for 10 days (under the Internal Security Act) when he was the Umno Youth chief.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
