Family of nine escapes fire
Kota Kinabalu: A family of nine escaped unscathed when their house at Kampung Nountun, Kolombong, was destroyed in a fire on Thursday.Theodoro Joseph, 40, said she was returning home from work when she received a call from her sister telling her about the fire at about 3.30pm.

"The house belongs to my 63-year-old father and we have stayed here for over 30 years. This was where I and my siblings grew up, it's hard to see our house destroyed in such a way," she said.

It was learnt that her parents, husband and children aged between three and 20 were home when the fire broke out. They tried frantically to put the fire out but failed.

It was also understood that the family has about 40 cats kept in cages. It was not immediately known whether all the felines survived.

Their neighbour who lives just a few feet away said she didn't realise what was happening until she looked out the window to see thick smoke coming from the house.

"It happened so quickly, the house went up in flames within a blink of an eye, there was nothing much we could do," she recalled.

Meanwhile, eight firefighters from the Lintas and Penampang Fire and Rescue Stations rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call at about 4.45pm.

The fire was brought under control at about 6.46pm. - Sherell Jeffrey
