Two terms: Sarawak agrees in principle
Kuching: Sarawak agrees in principle with the Federal Government's plan to limit the tenure of the Prime Minister, Menteris Besar and Chief Ministers to two terms. However, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the State wanted to study the details of the proposal first before committing its support.

"We have to look at it but, in principle, it's good," he told reporters after opening a new hotel here on Friday (Oct 19).

Abang Johari was asked to comment on Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's announcement on Thursday (Oct 18) that a two-term limit would be introduced as an immediate measure to reform the political system.

The Prime Minister also said constitutional amendments were needed for this to happen, adding that he was confident of getting a two-thirds majority in Parliament required to amend the Federal Constitution. Abang Johari said the State Constitution would also have to be amended in order to cap the Chief Minister's tenure at two terms.
