6,000 Filipinos are now awaiting deportation
Sandakan: The 6,000-odd Filipinos awaiting deportation will be given priority during weekly voyages from Sandakan to Zamboanga from now until Christmas. This is to ensure Filipinos awaiting deportation at the various detention centres in the state will be able to reunite with their loved during the coming Yuletide season.

Aleson Shipping Line representative in Sabah Juvy Samonte Tulipas, said the open air deck accommodation of M/V Antonia 1 will be designated to accommodate the needs of deportees.

"Our open air deck tourist accommodation designed to accommodate 300 passengers will be designated for deportees as and when need arises," she said.

The deportation exercise will be carried out in batches on a weekly basis soon after these immigration violators are issued with travel documents by the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

It was learnt that the embassy in Kuala Lumpur will promptly respond to any request from the Malaysian authorities on the issuance of travel documents to detained undocumented Filipinos in Sabah.

At the same time, the embassy assured that all scheduled consular missions in Sabah will be executed for for the benefit of both the detainees and the Sabah Government.

Juvy said the management has strictly implemented a "No Ticket, No Document, No Entry" policy in all its weekly voyages.

Juvy said deportees need not worry upon arrival at the Zamboanga port because officers and personnel from the Department Of Social, Welfare and Development (DSWD) will extend a helping hand during their temporary stay in the city.

"Deportees will be given food and accommodation and free ferry passage to their respective provinces while under the custody of DSWD," she stressed.

The six-decker passenger and cargo vessel is designed to accommodate 800 passengers and 54,000 tons of cargo.

Passengers during the 18-hour sea journey are at liberty to enjoy the facilities at the vessel like air conditioned canteen, open air canteen, clean receiving cum TV lobby, karaoke room, 10 tourist standard cabin rooms, and friendly and accommodating stewards and crew.
