RM58m revenue collected after Water Dept revamp
Kota Kinabalu: A TOTAL of RM58 million in revenue has been collected by the Sabah Water Department headed by Amarjit Singh in just two months after its restructuring. This was revealed by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal who noted the importance of not only revenue collection but also finances to address problems faced outside the city, especially in terms of inadequate and improper water channels to supply treated water.

He said these are among measures that need to be taken.

"The department is already functioning well as what we have hoped. Previously the department was dealing with not just the credibility issue but also leakages.

"Now there are no more leakages in the department but a place to get State Government finances to benefit the people," he said.

He was also happy to note the department's close relationship with the Federal Government through the Water, Land and Natural Resources Ministry.

"This is among the most desirable steps to ensure the problems of not only water supply but also sewerage and mitigation in the State can be addressed.

"We realise and know a lot of problems arise when it comes to water supply and we are on our way to addressing these, but what matters to us is not only in terms of coordination but also the close collaboration we need to bring in projects for the benefit of the people," said Shafie.

He noted the current financial constraints faced by the nation but, nevertheless, stated a number of priority projects which need to be implemented to ensure ample supply of water not only for the locals and industry players but tourists as well.

"What is important is the locals who thirst for a more organised water supply," he said.

He also noted that this was the second meeting he had with Xavier and hoped there will be more meetings and discussions for the benefit of the people and the State.

"I am happy with the frequent discussions and hope the Federal Government will help to overcome problems faced by the people at the grassroots level.

"Water and power supply are among our top priorities, apart from flood issues," he said.

Shafie also noted issues involving clogged drains during the flood season and the importance of focusing on proper sewerage and mitigation system in the State.

"Kota Belud is among the main focus to address this issue. We hope to realise large-scale paddy plantation in the district but we need to address the frequent flooding problem there," he said.

"Among efforts to be done include deepening the rivers in the area". – SJ
