Defending champs easily qualify for Safa Cup finals
Kota Kinabalu: Defending champions Safa Bandaraya has booked their berth in the final rounds of the Sabah Football Association (Safa) Cup after topping the West Zone in the group stage tournament which concluded on Tuesday at the Likas Synthetic pitch. The team powered by three ex-President Cup players, Fuad Amin Madlan, Billy Doliante and Syazwan Roslan kept a perfect record by taking the maximum nine points with 2-0 victories in all three matches against Putatan, Papar and Penampang. Assistant team manager Matasan Ahmad said the team played well and deserved to be in the final rounds.

"Despite only two weeks of training under coach Roslan Wasli, the boys played very well and showed that they were the better team in the group and deserved to qualify," he said.

However, he played down the team's chances in the finals scheduled on November 19-24 here in Kota Kinabalu.

"It will not be easy to defend the title this year. All other teams have prepared well and we will try our very best and hopefully the players can deliver the goods.' The closing ceremony was attended by director general of City Hall Datuk Amrullah Kamak who is also the patron for Safa Bandaraya.

Meanwhile, the inter district tournament in its sixth edition this year will feature eight zones that include West Coast, Upper Interior, Lower Interior Nabalu, North, Sandakan, Tawau, Central Interior with addition of Membakut, Menumbok, Tamparuli, Matunggong and Labuan in the groups.
