Badminton is part of Chong Wei's life, says Misbun
Kuala Lumpur: National men's singles coach Datuk Misbun Sidek described the decision of his charge, Datuk Lee Chong Wei to return to badminton action as a shock but it is good news to his fans all over the world.Misbun believed only happiness on the court could heal the pain endured by the badminton ace who has just recovered from stage one nose cancer.

"Fans missed watching his game style in the court. I believe when the knowledge of badminton is so ingrained in him, his spirit to play is always there.

"Now I believe, in his heart, the spirit is stronger than before. When he said he was returning to the court, he is already mentally ready. Many people who suffered the same fate as Chong Wei would have given up. But Chong Wei is really extraordinary.

"I am not surprised his performance is still the same as before, maybe even better," he said when met by reporters at Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara here, Friday.

On Thursday, Chong Wei announced his decision to return to badminton competition and targeted his fifth appearance at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. He was the Olympic silver medallist for three consecutive times in 2008, 2012 and 2016.

He was away from the badminton arena for four months to undergo treatment for cancer in Taiwan and is expected to start training next month.

Misbun said the coaching team would not make any drastic change in its programme and would keep up with the needs of the former world number one player.

"He knows how the training goes and when to step up the pace as usual. We will work closely with him," he said.

In this regard, Chong Wei's coach, Hendrawan said he is happy the player has decided to return and praised his determination.

"Knowing Chong Wei, he is a person with a clear objective. When he announced he wants to continue with his career, it means he is targeting something. Chong Wei is not just a player, he knows what he wants.

"I am not worried about technique as I believe Chong Wei has no problem on the matter. Thus it is key we must help him to rebuild his fitness," said Hendrawan. – Bernama
