Harish, Leviance win singles titles

Kota Kinabalu: South Korea bound youngsters Harish John Shailendra and Leviance Chong captured the men's and women's singles titles in the Sabah Soft Tennis Open Championship held at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex recently.The two-day round robin matches saw Harish emerging top in the men's category with Mark Reuben Pang in second place while Wong Min Han and Gladwin Lee were the surprise semi-finalists.

In the women's category, Leviance Chong took the top spot while her younger sister Levander Christyen Chong came in second with Cristabel Ntakop Ndzi and Mary Foo Lonia, the two losing semi-finalists.

Head coach KK Chin said the tournament staged as warm-up matches for the players in preparation for the Korea Cup and the World Juniors later this month was a success.

"The objective was achieved with flying colours. Despite two weeks of five-hour daily intensive training sessions in preparation for the Korea Cup and the World Junior Championship in South Korea from November 11-25, many players still suffered from muscle pulls, cramps and dehydration due to the hot weather. However, the weather in South Korea is much cooler this time of the year and this will be an advantage to our players," he said.

During the awards ceremony, Sabah Soft Tennis Association (SSTA) patron Alex Padua, gave a thumbs up to the players and told them to feel proud representing the country and they must show good sportsmanship, respect their opponents and must give their all to try to win their matches.

Meanwhile, SSTA president Richard Shak promised incentives will be given to those who bring back medals and he also thanked Jeniffer Kiu who is the only qualified chair umpire from Sabah to conduct a short officiating course for the players.
