Human capital vital for industrialisation: Tangau
Kota Kinabalu: Deputy Chief Minister cum Minister of Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau said one of the key factors of industrialisation is human capital. "When we talk about human capital, we talk about skills, including communication skills, soft skills and things like that, so I supposed that is where language comes in," he said.

He said this after officiating the opening ceremony of the 2nd International Conference on Languages, Linguistics and Society 2018 held at the Promenade Hotel here, Thursday.

He said industrialisation also has something to do with entrepreneurship which also depends on leadership.

"Leadership also means integrity, trustworthiness and things like that and language is the embodiment of knowledge, the embodiment of value system," he told a media conference.

He said our ability to communicate good values by way of language is important to industrialisation.

Tangau was also happy to note the numerous efforts taken by the government as well as private sectors in addressing challenges faced by the KDM and other communities in uplifting their mother-tongue.

Earlier in his keynote speech, he said the Fourth Industrial Revolution is interacting with other socio-economic and demographic factors to create a perfect storm of business model change in all industries, resulting in major disruptions to labour markets.

He said new categories of jobs will emerge, partly or wholly displacing others, thus the skills set required in both old and new occupations will change in most industries and transform how and where people work.

Meanwhile, the two – day international conference was organised by the Research Unit for Languages and Linguistics of Sabah, alongside the Centre for the Promotion of Knowledge and Language, Universiti Malaysia Sabah.

With the theme "Language, linguistics and society in the era of disruptive technologies", it features local and international academicians.

They presented their research on the ways that language and linguistics impact and affect society in an era where traditional or existing methods, thoughts and patterns are challenged by new disruptive technologies in diverse contexts such as communication, education, heritage maintenance, policing making, governance and various other fields.

Also present was UMS Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr D Kamarudin D Mudin and Research Unit of Languages and Linguistics of Sabah Head Dr Jeannet Stephen, among others. - Sherell Jeffrey
