553 non-Muslim bodies, schools to receive govt aid tomorrow

Kota Kinabalu: A total of 553 non-Muslim religious bodies and schools in Sabah will be receiving financial assistance from the State Government.Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal is expected to present the assistance to recipients from the south west coast and interior regions at the State Legislative Assembly here tomorrow (Tuesday).State Finance Assistant Finance Kenny Chua said the total amount of assistance given to the deserving recipients this year is more than previous years.

He said Shafie would announce the total amount during the presentation ceremony."It's going to be a generous amount for the State Government is committed to supporting non-Muslim religious bodies and schools."This Government, led by Shafie, will never neglect them," said Chua, who chairs the panel that looked into all the applications for the assistance.Among them, he said, were national-type Chinese schools, mission schools, kindergartens, conforming and private schools.

He added that the presentation of the assistance for the Tawau and Sandakan zones will be done later this month.Less than a month after taking helm of the State administration, Shafie, the Warisan President, had assured the people that the State Government under his leadership would fulfil its pledge to help non-Muslim communities, including to develop more places of worship for them.

He reaffirmed the commitment in August by assuring that the State Government would continue to provide an annual allocation to non-Muslim religious bodies, missionary schools and Chinese private schools in Sabah.He had said that the purpose of the allocation was to ease the financial burden of the institutions.
