Rethink on the Labuan Halal hub
Labuan: The Federal Territories Ministry is determined to revive the RM86 million Labuan halal hub which is said to be a failure and the 'white-elephant' of the island.Datuk Khalid Abdul Samad (pic) said his ministry will look into solutions to revive the actual concept of the halal hub to ensure its competitiveness and relevancy.

"After a visit there and thorough inspection, I believe the project was implemented without proper planning and direction.

"We even found that as one factory was supposed to be used as a processing plant for halal goods but was not as the plant was not built in accordance to specifications," he said.

He spoke to reporters after attending the 100th Year Anniversary of Remembrance Day ceremony organised by Labuan Corporation in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture here on Sunday.

Khalid said the revival of the ailing hub would involve no government funding as new players had shown interest to invest in the halal hub development.

"We have met with a few players who are keen on the hub's development and the feedback as been positive.

"Several international companies which are interested in their products being recognised as halal will be able to develop the halal hub here," he said.

Khalid added that the Labuan halal hub would also be an imperative platform for international players to penetrate the Malaysian market and those connected to hub here as well as the market of the Middle East.
