Keningau: Police arrested a foreign man having a fake identity card and trying to bribe two on-duty civil servants at Jalan Apin-Apin, Thursday.Acting District Police Chief, ASP Lee Nyuk Kim said the 25-year-old labourer from Kampung Kerabot, Ansip, here, was arrested and remanded for investigation under Section 25 (1)(e) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 and Section 17 (b) of the Malaysian Anti - Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009.

He said on Thursday at 7.27pm, a report was lodged by a 48-year-old senior police officer that when he led a team of traffic personnel from the Kepayan police headquarters to conduct operations at Apin- Apin, one of his traffic police personnel stopped a lorry driven by the suspect.

"The traffic policeman checked his MyKad using the MCOPS equipment and it was found that there was no record in the National Registration Department system and suspected it was a fake," he told a press conference at the district police headquarters here, Friday.

Lee said further investigations confirmed that the MyKad was fake and the suspect has being using it since February this year. He said the suspect told police he bought the MyKad from a man known only as Paul for RM3,000.

"The suspect also tried to bribe the senior police officer with RM500 so as not to arrest him.

"The complainant had warned several times that the act of giving bribe is an offence under the MACC Act but the suspect ignored the warning and was arrested. The RM500 cash was seized and referred to the MACC for further action," he said.

Lee said the suspect was also tested positive for syabu.
