Full inspection on goods though Customs: Dr M

Putra Jaya: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (pic) said the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) would have to carry out full inspection on goods brought into the country and not just at random.He said the matter was among the proposals agreed at the Special Cabinet Committee on Anti-Corruption (JKKMAR) meeting here Wednesday, which should be implemented by ministries, departments and agencies in the effort to reduce the incidence of corruption. "Many more actions have to be taken and among them we need to ensure goods brought in through Customs should be thoroughly checked and not just at random on one or two or three items only," he said.ADVERTISEMENT Apart from that, Dr Mahathir said all government-linked companies (GLC) were given two years from Oct 5 to establish an Integrity and Governance Unit (IGU). He said the initiative was to strengthen integrity and corporate governance, in line with the desire to make Malaysia as a corruption-free country."IGU will be placed under the company's Board of Directors while its core function on implementation and reporting will be regulated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC)," he said.To boost corporate governance, Dr Mahathir said the JKKMAR meeting also agreed that a guideline on "Corporate Liabilities and Adequate Procedures" would be issued for all companies.ADVERTISEMENT Besides that, Dr Mahathir said the National Anti-Corruption Plan (NACP) would be launched in January 2019 to enhance the Government's administration management system on governance, integrity and anti-corruption.He said the certification of ISO 37001 Anti-Bribery Management Systems would be adopted by every high-risk ministry, agency, department and GLC to prevent corruption and to build a culture of integrity.

"The effort will make Malaysia as the first country in the world to obtain the ISO 37001 certification in the public sector," he said.Dr Mahathir also said the jurisdiction of Judicial Appointment Commission would be enhanced to ensure no external interference.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

He said since its establishment six months ago, JKKMAR had achieved 60 initiatives to improve the process and system of governance, integrity and anti-corruption.Dr Mahathir said the efforts would be monitored by the Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption Centre (GIACC) on its implementation by the ministries involved so that Malaysia would be known for its integrity and not corruption. - Bernama
