RB monitors coral growth in Manukan
Kota Kinabalu: Diving can be fun but not when what you see underwater are not colourful healthy coral reefs and sea creatures but dead coral reefs due to fish bombing, said Coordinator of Inland Revenue Board (IRB) Manukan Marine CSR Program, Jeprin Kimbiun. On Oct 25-26, some 24 IRB personnel from Sabah took part in an IRB Marine CSR monitoring programme at Pulau Manukan with the aim of monitoring the growth of coral reefs on the coral frame lower on Manukan Island on Jan 11, 2014 apart from cleaning the island.

Manukan is the second largest island in Tunku Abdul Rahman Park and is recognised as a national marine park.

The island is so popular and has a well-lit area on the south coast and the best beach oi the eastern tip of the island.

"Off Manukan Island, there are coral reefs that are ideal for dives. Of the five islands included in Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, this island has another advanced tourist facility with 20 chalets, club houses and several restaurants and dive centers.

"Recreational facilities include swimming pools, football fields, volleyball and sepak takraw courts while infrastructure facilities include clean water, electricity, plant standardisation, structured sewerage systems and also public telephones using solar energy.

"The island is also covered with thick vegetation and has a climbing path. The islands within the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park are Gaya, Sapi, Manukan, Mamutik and Sulug," he said.

Jeprin said divers spent 35-34 minutes in the water (bottom time) per dive.

According to him, the lowering of the coral frames in 2014 was conducted by 101 Hasil divers.

He said the challenges faced were sea conditions with strong currents and visual conditions that were limited due to cloudy water.

"This activity has also been recorded in the Malaysia Guinness Book of Record for coral planting activities of 3,400 new coral reefs.

Jeprin said such CSR activities would continue to be a culture by the IRBM in the future. - Johan Aziz
