Emotional support crucial for cancer patients' recovery
Sandakan: The family, friends and relevant organisations play important roles to provide emotional support to cancer patients.State Assistant Minister of Health and People's Wellbeing, Norazlinah Arif said:

"The support of family and friends are important throughout the entire treatment period such as in helping patients to regain a sense of normalcy, maintain emotional stability and improve their chances of ensuring a positive clinical outcome.

"Meanwhile, the relevant organisations could play their role in educating public on cancer awareness.

"Moreover they can motivate cancer patients through the sharing from other cancer survivors which were gathered under the organisation," she said, at the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign at Hospital Duchess of Kent (HDOK).

Present were President of Sandakan Breast Cancer Support Association Sabah (Sandakan Pink Ribbon), Mary Alex Mansiw, Director of HDOK, Dr. Francis Paul, HDOK Head of Surgical Department, Dr. Lai Chung Ket, medical officers, nurses, breast cancer survivors and public.

The one-day event was filled with talks from specialist medical officers, sharing from breast cancer survivors, exhibition, zumba and breast health consultation from HDOK medical staff.

Dr. Francis encouraged the public to go for regular medical check-up not only when they spot symptom or signs having the breast cancer.

"I believe almost all forms of cancer are treatable, as long as the disease is detected in the early stage.

"That's why an annual physical is the first and most critical component in any effective cancer prevention strategy.

"By spotting the disease quickly and identifying cancer cells before they have a chance to spread, the patient's prognosis may improves significantly," he said.

In the ceremony, Norazlinah also presented RM5,000 to Sandakan Pink Ribbon for the usage of the Association to carry out awareness activity especially in educating the public on breast cancer.

She praised the noble work carried out by Sandakan Pink Ribbon since its establishment in 2006 and hoping the Association will continue play their role in community. - Winnie Kasmir
