Three dead, 26 hurt in Kuching blast

Kuching: Three men died, while 26 others were injured after a powerful blast at City One Megamall in Jalan Song that was believed to be caused by a gas explosion at 3.30pm Tuesday.Kuching District Police Chief, ACP Ng Ah Lek confirmed that four the injured were in critical condition and admitted to the intensive care unit of the Sarawak General Hospital.Fire and Rescue Operations assistant director Tiong Ling Hii said the other injured victims had also been taken to a government hospital for further treatment.

Two of the deceased were employees of Nene Chicken, a fast food restaurant, which was undergoing final preparations for its opening day on Wednesday.The 22 other people were hurt in the explosion which was believed to have been caused by a leaking gas cylinder.Khirudin said they were alerted on the explosion at 3.37pm.George Sting, 39, who was at the building during the incident said the explosion occurred at the shop which was under renovation.

"I was purchasing a pizza in front of a shop that was under renovation when suddenly, a strong explosion occurred."The workers in the shop (that was being renovated) ran out, and some of them were seriously injured," he said.
