Labuan: Karatekas representing Labuan Karate Association (LKA) excelled at the 5th International Open Karate Championship of the KL Mayors Cup 2018 and was crowned overall runners-up.Labuan exponents bagged a total of 26 medals, including eight gold, 10 silver and eight bronze medals at the three-day tournament held in Kuala Lumpur last week.LKA sent some 20 athletes from the island to represent the club in the tournament which saw the participation of over 600 athletes from six countries including Uzbekistan, Nepal, Indonesia, India, Singapore and Malaysia.

A total of 67 categories were contested at the meet.The first gold medal was picked up by Muhd Isyraf Faiz in the boys individual kumite (10-11 years +45kg) category while Muhd Kaszym Aqim Kasryanto secured another gold in the same category (-45kg).
Zacchaeus Dunang Jerangku rose to the top of the pack in the boys individual kumite (12-13 years -50kg) and Mohd Azib Aiman secured a gold in the cadet individual kumite (-52kg).Seasoned karateka Sam Hiang Fong obtained another gold for the team in female senior individual kumite (-55kg) and Muhd Aqmal Asmadie secured another gold for the team in the junior individual kumite (+76kg).

On of the highlights of the tournament was when the senior individual female kata category was completely dominated by LKA exponents with Sam Hiang Fong nabbing the gold, Syarulniza Abdul Jamil for the silver and the bronze awarded to Hazimah Jamil.Syarul also picked up another silver in the female individual senior kumite (+56kg) and Hazimah a silver in the same category (-50kg).

Nur Aleesya Dayana Asmadie and Nur Aneesa Aira Affendi both bagged silvers in the girls individual kata (6-7 years) and girls individual kumite (10-11 years -35kg) respectively.Amber Jelszablle Jinugi bagged a silver and bronze in the respective girls individual kumite and kata (10-11years).Another athlete who bagged two medals, one silver and a bronze, was Mohd Norfarhan Nordin in the senior male kumite (-60kg) and kata categories respectively.

Four other bronze medals were won by Mohd Irfan Firdaus, Muhd Aiqal Asmadie (two bronze), Putri Nurbuhairah Norazlan in their respective categories.Meanwhile, Labuan exponents also shined in the team plays earning themselves one gold (male team kata), three silvers (female team kumite 18 years above, girls team kumite 10-13 years and male cadet team kumite) and one bronze (girls team kata 13 years below) in the team categories overall. - Iffah Dilaney
