Sandakan first district to have agri database
Sandakan: The Agriculture Department officially launched its Farmer Database (Pengkalan Data Petani), to record the data of all farmers registered with the Department.

Sandakan is the first district to implement a systematic and organised management database for registered local farmers in the state.

Deputy Director of Agriculture, (Management Division) of Sabah Agriculture Department, Muhidin Haji Ismail said the database is part of upgrading efforts to enhance data of local farmers in Sandakan.

It allows the State Government to intensify its food production as well as facilitate the Department in identifying farmers implementing Good Agricultural Practices.

"Among the recorded data in the Farmer Database are personal data, type of farming (bidang yang diusahakan), land sizes and income earned.

"To date, 650 farmers in the district have been recorded in the database," he said at the presentation of Crops Development Incentive to project participants and certificates to Basic Agri Course and the launching of Farmer Database at SMK Merpati hall.

His speech was delivered by Assistant Director of Agriculture Department of District Management Division, Jumaat Ibrahim.

Meanwhile, the Government through the Agriculture Department is trying to offset the production of industrial crops such as palm oil by implementing several Food Crop Development Programmes.

"Through Food Crop Development Programme, the Department encourages farmers to implement Permanent Fruits Crops, Coconuts and Short Term Crops.

"For the record in Sandakan, the Government has planted coconuts in 30 hectares, fruits on 27 hectares and maize, five hectares.

"In addition, the Department has trained 113 operators of agriculture base industry through Training and Short Course," he said.

Also present was Sandakan Senior Agriculture Officer, Jamaluddin Lani. - Winnie Kasmir
