DPM clarifies CNY Carnival 'misunderstanding'
Kota Kinabalu: Deputy Chief Minister cum Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Christina Liew, has cleared the air over a media report on Sunday that Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) has decided to stop the Federation of Chinese Associations Sabah (FCAS) from jointly organising the annual Chinese New Year Carnival from next year.It was reported that DBKK has decided to rotate the task of co-organising the event among FCAS affiliates, beginning with the Kota Kinabalu Hokkien Association next year.

"I think it is a case of misunderstanding or miscommunication. I am glad to have met FCAS leaders today to thrash out the matter," she said in a statement after a meeting with an eight-member delegation from FCAS led by its President Tan Sri T.C. Goh, Monday.

Liew, who is also Api-Api Assemblywoman, assured FCAS that it will continue to hold the event with support from the State Government.

"I hope DBKK will render its cooperation to make the event a success as in previous years since four years ago," she said.

Thanking the Minister for her understanding and support, Goh said he was happy that the issue has been resolved with an assurance of support from the Government, Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Sabah Tourism Board (STB) and DBKK.

"We will mobilise our organising committee and Gaya Street is the preferred venue for the carnival. The date will be announced after our meeting," he said, adding that the event will not clash with other events related to the Spring Festival.

Also present were the Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Datuk Datu Rosmadi Datu Sulai, Political Secretary Vivien Lee, FCAS Deputy President Datuk Jimmy Yong and Secretary-General Datuk Andrew Yong.
