Sultan of Kedah visits Keris exhibition

Alor Setar: The Sultan of Kedah Sultan Sallehuddin Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah and the Sultanah of Kedah Sultanah Maliha binti Almarhum Tengku Ariff Monday visited the Keris Exhibition at the State Art Gallery here.The royal couple spent almost two hours at the exhibition where some 100 keris belonging to collectors from several states had been on display for the past two days.Also present were State Information, Communications and Multimedia Non-Governmental Organisations Committee chairman Firdaus Ahmad representing the Menteri Besar and State Secretary Datuk Bakar Din.

State Economic Planning (Tourism) Division senior assistant director Zainizam Zainol said the exhibition was organised for the first time in Kedah to give visitors the opportunity to learn more about the weapon which had been synonymous with the Malay culture and way of life."Since the exhibition started young people have been coming to admire the uniquely and interesting crafted weapons," he said adding that the exhibition was organised in collaboration with Syarikat Peninsular Ventures Sdn Bhd."Each keris has its own story and the collection which are on display here are among the best in terms of the double edged wavy blades, elaborately carved hilts and sheaths. "Some of the finely crafted daggers are believed to have originated from Pattani, Thailand," he told reporters here Monday.
