Tawau cabbies stage demo calling for justice against e-hailing
Tawau: The Gabungan Persatuan-Persatuan Teksi, Kereta Sewa, Limosin Sabah dan Wilayah Persekutuan Labuan (GTSL) here staged a peaceful demonstration (pic) calling for justice and equality with e-hailing vehicle drivers. Its Chairman Tamrin Eraba said the demonstration was held to defend the fate of 1,166 taxi drivers in Tawau and Lahad Datu, as well as 85 taxi licence owners newly approved by Tawau's Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board.

He said they will continue to reject e-hailing services which were announced by Transport Minister Anthony Loke on July 11 as long as equality is not given to taxi owners and drivers.

He said they urge the Government to review the matter and conduct discussions with all parties involved before making any decision.

"This includes conducting a comprehensive study as the new rules are deemed to give special freedom and exemptions to e-hailing vehicle activities while taxi drivers are still subjected to existing regulations."

He said they do not agree that the process of obtaining a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) licence to be made easier and handed over to the application company or agency other than the Road Transport Department.

"The implementation requirement for e-hailing drivers to obtain the PSV licence should be conducted on July 12 this year, not July 12 next year.

"We also disagree with the e-hailing Operator Class licence be handed over to the e-hailing company because it not only denies the freedom rights of drivers but also maintains the modern slavery of the nation's taxi industry such as taxi drivers, car rentals and airport taxis through Taxi Operation Licence (taxi permit)," he said.

In this regard, he said they reject e-hailing as long as equality has not been reached, adding that they will not agree unless the Government fulfils their demands.

The peaceful demonstration was held simultaneously throughout the country with Gabungan Pertubuhan Teksi, Kereta Sewa, Limosin dan Teksi Lapangan Terbang Se'Malaysia (GTSM).

Also present were Tawau Branch GTSL Chairman Sulaiman Daing Choa and the Persatuan Pemilik/ Pengusaha Teksi Rumpun Melayu (Persarum) Deputy Chairman Saripudin Tawile. - Lagatah Toyos
