Cops adopt another neighbourhood

Sandakan: The People's Housing Programme (PPR) of Taman Harmoni, Mile 3, here has been chosen as the second "Taman Perumahan Angkat" (adopted neighbourhood) by the district police.The launching was officiated by district Police Chief ACP Mohd Azhar Hamin.ADVERTISEMENT Also present were Elopura Assemblyman Calvin Chong, Deputy Police Chief Abdul Fuad Abdul Malek, Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) Deputy President II Johny Ronggitom and Taman Harmoni Neighbourhood Watch Chairperson Halimah Atiu.Speaking to reporters, Chong said such programme could enhance cooperation between the community and police in producing a safe housing environment."What is more important is we hope it can reduce crime rates."But the residents must also be responsible and cooperate with the police," he said.ADVERTISEMENT He also said that the dangers of drugs, crime and social problems ought to be taught to the children.Meanwhile, Azhar said the adopted neighbourhood programme is among initiative by the police in eradicating criminal activities.

He said that volunteer patrolling will be established by the Neighbourhood Watch in the housing area. The first adopted neighbourhood was implemented at PPR Sg Manila, Mile 12, in Aug last year. - Mardinah Jikur
