SANDAKAN: Another 20 illegal water pipe connections draining the State Water Department of possibly millions of ringgit over the years while denying genuine paying subscribers the commodity were detected in Kg Karamunting, Batu Sapi Road, Jalan Trig Hill and Flat Sim Block Sim-Sim, Thursday.

Sandakan Division Water Engineer, Ishar Hamka Ismail, said the operation was carried out after a water-theft report was received. He said after investigations with the help of Salcon in the area, 18 illegal connections were detected in the Kg Karamunting area directly connected from the 2-inch GI main pipe using 1/2 inch poly plumbing.

An illegal connection without meter was also detected in the Trig Hill road area directly connected from the MSCL 100 mm main pipe using 1/2 inch poly pipe and another straight connection from the 2-inch GI pipe stand.

The disconnections that started at 9am ended at about 12.15pm with the help of Salcon Engineering and the contractor appointed by the Water Department.

The offence is referred to under Section 49 (b) and section 53 which is a fine of up to RM 50,000 or two years imprisonment under the Sabah State Water Supply Enactment 2003.

The Water Department reminded all consumers to comply with the law as stated in the 2003 Water Supply Enactment or face severe fines if found guilty of offences.

During the operation, warnings are also given before legal action is taken if they still fail to comply.

The Sandakan Water Department’s Office seek cooperation from the public to inform any of the cases of theft or leakage of water pipes immediately by calling it’s Hotline at 1 300 8888 55.
