Tawau Council urged to review decision
TAWAU: The Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) has been urged to re-study its earlier decision on relocating the Takada Sunday Market from Takada Pertama Commercial Centre to Jalan Habib Sheikh Sabindo, here.

Making the call, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister cum Sri Tanjong assemblyman Datuk Jimmy Wong said the best interest of the people must be taken into consideration before opting for a decision.

“As such, I will bring forward the appeal of the traders in Sabindo to the MPT and I hope the council would respect their wishes,” he said after a walkabout around the Sabindo area.

Recently, a group of 143 business owners from 14 commercial blocks in Habib Sheikh Street signed a petition against the move and will submit it to the Local Government and Housing Ministry, MPT, Tawau MP Datuk Christina Liew and Wong.

The group’s spokesperson Leong Kien Min said the Sunday market would have 500 stalls and was assumed to be using up to about 500 parking lots. It was made to understand that the existing parking lots are sufficient for the businesses and their clients, and the relocation would cause shortage of parking lots and traffic congestion. On the door-to-door consultation by the MPT, the group claimed that they have never received any visit from the officials. Also present were the Sri Tanjong community development leader Koo Hung Eow and development officer Philip Yap.
