Dad charged with assaulting son

KOTA KINABALU: A 38-year-old driver was charged in the Magistrate’s Court, Monday, with assaulting his 13-year-old son.
Chong Vui Bing pleaded not guilty to committing the offence at 9pm on July 28, last year in a house at Kg Sugud, Penampang.

The charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code read with Section 18A of the Domestic Violence (Amendment) Act which carries a jail term of up to one year or fine of up to RM2,000 or both, upon conviction.
Chong’s wife, who was present in court, informed the court that she wishes to withdraw the police report against her husband saying that they had reconciled and she was confident that her husband would not commit similar act as he has been good to them since.
The wife said the son was hit on that day as he wanted to calm them from fighting.
She also said she would take full responsible should Chong assault them and that no one forced her to retract the report.ADVERTISEMENT
Inspector Lim Swee Beng, prosecuting, applied for another date pending an instruction from the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s office.
The court set Feb 25 for mention of the case and offered Chong bail at RM1,500 in two sureties.

Earlier, duty counsel Shareen Tang, representing Chong, applied for a lower bail amount on the grounds that he works as a lorry driver and has seven children.
Meanwhile, a 24-year-old man was jailed 30 days for having four iron rods, believed to be stolen.
Magistrate Mohd Aizat Abdul Rahim ordered Ali Basil Siddik to serve the sentence from Monday after he admitted to the charge.
Ali, who was arrested in a boat at Kolombong river at 11.30pm on Jan 5 after he failed to give reasonable explanation on how he obtained them.
The charge under Section 22A(1) of the Minor Offences Ordinances provides for a RM100 fine and three months jail or both on conviction.
