Foreigner jailed 40 months over Segama shop blast

A 64-year-old fisherman who was involved in the jewellery shop blast at Segama complex, recently, was jailed 40 months for having explosives without a permit.

Julna Gutulla (pic) pleaded guilty before Magistrate Mohamad Aizat Abdul Rahim to the charge against him on Tuesday. The court also handed a fine of RM3,000 or two months’ jail to Julna.
The foreigner was found having the explosives at 6.45pm on Jan. 8, this year at a house in Kg Pondo, Pulau Gaya.
The charge stated that he had the explosive under suspicious circumstances and did not have any permit.
The offence under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957 carries a jail term of up to seven years, or a fine of up to RM10,000, or both, on conviction.

During mitigation, Julna who was not represented, asked for leniency. However, Prosecuting Officer, Insp. Albert Basiri, urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence on grounds that Julna had committed a serious offence which could endanger the public.
The court heard that Julna was arrested on Jan 8, following the incident at 2.45am on Dec. 31.

Three bottles containing ammonia powder found at his house when arrested. The investigating officer said Julna was the person who made the explosive.
The main suspect in the incident was also arrested and currently under remand.
Police are looking for another three foreigners including a woman identified as Lani, Aris and Siti, all in their 30s, to facilitate investigations.
