Kudat village reaps benefit from UMS research
KOTA KINABALU:

Eighty villagers from Kampung Kabangaan Kudat participated in a programme to increase palm oil revenue and income organised by the Faculty of Science and Natural Resources (FSSA) of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) from Feb 2018 to Jan 2019.

Vice-Chancellor UMS Prof Datuk Dr D Kamarudin D Mudin said that it is another UMS initiative through FSSA to translate the results of quality studies at UMS for the benefit of the local community and to reduce the number of people with B40 income.

“At UMS, all its researchers are committed to conducting researches that respond to industry needs and help the needs of the community,” he said in conjunction with the opening and closing of the FSSA Programme with the Kg Kebangaan community.

He said these important findings could then be transferred to those who needed them.

“I was made to understand by Prof Baba, Dean of FSSA, that this programme is a project under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Education Malaysia through the University Community Transformation Center (UCTC) which was conducted at Kg Kabangaan in Kudat as early as February 2018.

He hoped that such technology would be transferred to the Kg Kabangaan community so that they can continue the good harvest of their respective farms.

“I hope it will also help other local communities in line with the concept of UCTC,” he said.

The UMS researchers’ research with selective microbial formulations successfully increased yield up to 5-7 tonnes per acre in a month and reduced reliance on chemical fertilisers, thereby reducing operating costs and improving soil structure and fertility.

The programme is sponsored by UCTC, Ministry of Education Malaysia at a cost of RM20,000.
