Start to a cleaner, better Penampang
PENAMPANG: Following adverse publicity over grass-cutting and garbage removal in the district lately, the District Council led by Executive Officer Tang Yang Ming held its first Gotong Royong clean up starting with the fish market in Donggongon on Tuesday.

Participated by 200 people comprising Council staff, nearly all the Councillors, staff of Member of Parliament Service Office and members of Tamu Traders Association and some members of the public, they collected bags of rubbish shortly after they got cracking at 6.30pm.

Having changed into working clothes and armed with gloves and masks, the one-and-half hour activity was an eye opener.

When the heavy drain covers were opened, spades and hoes were used to dig out plastic rubbish, hardened lard mixed with mud from the last flood fermenting with fish waste from the market producing a terrible stink that were rarely acted upon by the previous administration.

Nevertheless all were collected in bags to be disposed by the council truck. The hands-on experience by the councillors sparked discussion and suggestion on further improvement such as better monitoring on how the fish mongers dispose of their waste and prevent further clogging of the surrounding drains.

More activities of similar nature will be expected in the near future. - Oswald Supi
