Crackdown on dirty crockery
KOTA KINABALU: City Hall will come down hard on restaurants serving customers with crockery that are dirty or in poor condition. This is apart from its routine effort against litterbugs, failure to use health card and poor kitchen cleanliness, among others.

The agency’s Cleanliness and Environmental Health Department seized a total of 65 dirty crockery from eight eateries in Jalan Gaya, here, on Jan 14.

The operation followed public complaints about dirty, rusty, severely scratched, chipped, broken or unusable goods or equipment being used in the premises.

“Among the confiscated items were plates, glasses, saucers and bowls,” its spokesman said, adding that they were found to be still in use despite their poor condition.

He stressed that these crockery should have been replaced by their respective owners as they were one of the causes of food poisoning.

“The poison stems from bacteria breeding inside these crockery as they are difficult to clean.

“They can also cause injury to those who drink or eat from these items,” he added.

He said similar operation would be carried out regularly to ensure that restaurants and coffee shops in the city are free from the use of dirty crockery.

“There’s nothing worse than going to a restaurant that served food on a plate that looks like it hasn’t seen a dishwasher or drinking beverage in a murky glass,” said one Jacob, who lauded the City Hall’s recent action on the matter.

He was sure that there are many patrons who have been on the receiving end of dirty crockery or mugs when dining out in other parts of the city and its suburbs.

“Squeaky clean crockery is a must at any time,” he added. - Oliver Voon
