LABUAN: The business community here has praised Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce (LCCC) Chairman Datuk Wong Kii Yii for enlivening the town with hundreds of lanterns to set the celebration mood for the coming Chinese New Year which falls on Feb 5.
Parti Wawasan Bandar Chairman Edward Kong, speaking on behalf of the community, said over the past few years Wong had never failed to decorate the town with lanterns and they were glad that he continued this year despite the economic slowdown on the island.

“For some this may not mean much but for children the decorations certainly heighten the excitement in waiting for the New Year,” he said.
He said in Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu such decorations on a larger scale are at mega shopping malls.
“It is good that we also have this in Labuan. Lanterns serve as an announcement of the arrival of an auspicious occasion.”
Most of the lanterns can be seen at Jalan Merdeka where the ferry terminals are located and also at Jalan Mustapha where the airport is located.

Edward recalled that in the early years, Chinese New Year used to be a fun-filled occasion for many with firecrackers, fun fairs, crowd-pulling “Kungfu” movies at the cinemas and even gambling permitted at clan associations.

“It is sad that all these New-Year related events hardly exist nowadays, so we are lucky to have the lanterns at least to welcome people to Labuan,” he said.
