Suspect caught after car plunges into river
KOTA KINABALU:

A suspected robber was arrested after his car plunged into the Sembulan River, here, following a chase by police who fired at his car to stop him escaping, Wednesday.

The local, believed to be from Papar, is said to have robbed a female bank officer in front of her house in Taman Hiburan, here, on Jan. 21 and was also responsible for a string of robberies.

City police chief ACP Habibi Majinji said officers had monitored him having his hair cut and dyed at a salon at Centre Point to disguise himself, before the drama began.

“As he was getting into his car outside the mall, police tried to apprehend him but he evaded arrest by trying to ram his car into our officers,” Habibi told reporters.

“Officers fired several shots at his car tyre puncturing it but the suspect drove away and police had to give chase. In the Sembulan area, the suspect deliberately drove his car into the river and tried to swim away but officers managed to nab him.”

Initial investigation revealed the man, who owned the Kancil, had three prior cases for robbery and causing harm to people.

The case is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for causing hurt while committing robbery.

In the Taman Hiburan robbery, the bank officer sustained serious injuries to her head after being allegedly hit with a sharp object by the suspect, said Habibi.

The woman was relieved of her jewellery, handbag, cash and ATM cards during the robbery. Daily Express learned that the woman is still being hospitalised at press time. - Jimmy Goh
