MJTA juniors sizzle at tennis tourney
KOTA KINABALU: Players from the Manoharan Junior Tennis Academy (MJTA) kicked of their 2019 tournament campaign with a sizzling performance at the annual schools tennis tournament organised by the Sandakan District School Sports Council (Majlis Sukan Sekolah Daerah Sandakan).

They won 6 out of the 7 events at the tournament which ended in Sandakan on Wednesday.

In the Boys Under-18 singles, Harish John Sunil Manoharan came up tops by beating Ngui Larm 8-5 in the final to earn the gold medal. Fellow KTRS player Johnaton Chan got the bronze. Harish and Johnaton then teamed up to win the Boys Under-18 doubles stopping Ngui Larm and Aaron Tsia in the final.

Jashnavissri A/P Uigneswaran was equally impressive in the Girls Under-15 singles event when she captured the gold medal with convincing wins over her rivals.

In the Boys Under-15 singles, it was Rishegeswaran A/L Uigneswaran’s turn to shine and he did so by taking the gold medal too.

Grace Chan added to the tally of gold medals for MJTA when she won the Girls Under-12 singles.

Jonathan Joshua Sunil Manoharan took the silver in the Boys U-12 singles event which was won by Vincent Tsia by a score of 9-8 in a closely fought final. Sharrvineswaran A/L Uigneswaran won the bronze. However Joshua and Sharrvineswaran got their measure of satisfaction when they combined effectively to win the Boys Under-12 doubles.

Present to give away the prizes were the Principal of SMK Elopura II Tan Ping Seng and the Sports Coordinator of Sandakan District Education Office Suriyansyah M. Yunus.

“It is a great start for the year 2019 and we hope to build on the momentum as we move on,” said KTRS President Taren Sunil.

Taren Sunil also expressed his thanks to MSSD Sandakan for organising the tournament.

“We thank the organisers for giving our juniors an important platform to get into the competition mood and gauge their current abilities,” he said.

“We are looking forward to the Mark Pang Ka Miew junior age-group tournament which is the Sandakan Leg of the annual Sabah Junior Tennis Tour,” added Taren Sunil.
